Lydiah Kiramba, assistant professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education, is in South Africa this week to give a presentation at the School of Languages for Education, North-West University in Potchefstroom. She is an invited international scholar from August 13-19. Kiramba’s invitation is funded by the National Research Foundation of South Africa through her collaboration with Dr. Dumisile Mkhize (of North-West University), a research project leader, and her team of five researchers from two South African universities.

Kiramba is presenting a paper titled “Language Purism in Education: English Medium Instruction in Kenyan Multilingual Classrooms” at the Faculty of Education, Potchefstroom Campus. She will also conduct workshops for postgraduate students linked to the project, and present to the wider academic community at the 5th International Conference on Language and Literacy Education, Wits School of Education, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Kiramba’s talk will focus on a qualitative study of multilingual students in English medium instruction who practiced translingual discursive practices. Her presentation will also offer suggestions for English medium instruction in emerging multilingual classrooms in global settings.
