Nicole Iverson, assistant professor of biological systems engineering, is part of a multi-disciplinary research team that has been awarded Jumpstart seed funding from ORED. Iverson’s team – which also includes Mark Wilson, associate professor of biochemistry, and Wayne Riekhof, assistant professor of biological sciences – is working on a project titled, “Microbial isocyanide natural products in health and disease.” Four teams of researchers from the university have been chosen for this award. All are doing research that will focus on pathogen-host interactions. Each team participated in workshops focused on generating funding opportunities with the National Institutes of Health.

With funding from the National Science Foundation, Yong-Rak Kim is leading a multi-disciplinary research team to understand binding of concrete. Kim’s team, which includes Joseph Turner, professor of mechanical and materials engineering, has found promising and more environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional cement-based concrete.
