Global Studies majors are only one of two majors on campus that have to study abroad as part of their graduation requirements. This means that our students are able to spend a summer, semester or even an academic year abroad and all the courses they take while abroad count towards their major requirements. Many of our students chose a traditional study abroad route such as a semester in Morocco studying Arabic and taking courses on local culture and history. However, some of our students chose to complete an internship while abroad. Our unique partnership with Matsudo Junior High School allows us to send two global studies majors to Japan every fall and spring. While in Matsudo (about 40 minutes by train from Tokyo) our students serve as Assistant Language Teachers helping Japanese students improve their English skills. In return for their work with student the school provides interns with a furnished apartment, a small travel stipend and a plane ticket to and from Japan. In addition, our interns get a chance to travel around the country, take Japanese language courses, receive mentorship from full time English teachers at the school and earn 12 credits that count towards their graduation. Many of our students who have completed the internship have gone on to teach English full time in Japan and around the world, while others have secured careers in nonprofit sector and numerous other professions.
