Register today for career development workshops on intercultural competence, design thinking

UPDATE: Registration for the following workshops has been closed to help protect the UNL community in response to COVID-19 as it develops. Per the chancellor's statement, the Office of Graduate Studies is currently evaluating events scheduled for the remainder of the spring semester. Further details on campus actions are available on the university's COVID-19 website.

On March 23 and 24, the Office of Graduate Studies will host a series of six career development workshops for graduate students or postdocs. These workshops will only be available in person due to the interactive nature of the content.

The workshops on March 24 will be divided based on academic or non-academic career paths. All events will be held in the Nebraska Union and lunch will be provided for those that attend at least one workshop that day.

In order to be guaranteed lunch, please register by March 13 (or March 12 for the Developing Intercultural Competence workshop). Contact about lunch options will occur closer to the event. Please contact Lisa Rohde at lrohde2@unl.edu or Erin Omar at eomar2@unl.edu if have any questions. The schedule and topics are shown below.

Career Exploration Through Design Thinking
March 23, 2020 | 9AM-12PM

Trying to figure out what you want to do when you finish graduate school? This workshop will show you how to intentionally design your life and explore multiple options for your future. Using the five mindsets of design thinking, participants will learn how to build their way forward and tackle life’s most challenging problems. Please bring your computer so you can participate in activities during the workshop.

Creating Individual Development Plans
March 23, 2020 | 1PM-4PM

Creating an Individual Development Plan (IDP) will help you prepare for your future, regardless of your career path. During this workshop, you will begin to draft your own Individual Development Plan, outline a vision for your career and set goals to capitalize on your strengths and address your development needs. With an IDP, you’re taking a deliberate approach to increase the skills, knowledge, and experience you need to advance in your chosen career. Please bring your computer so you can participate in activities during the workshop.

Diversity Statements
March 24 | 9AM-12PM

Writing a diversity statement for an academic job requires you to meaningfully reflect on how you integrate diversity and inclusivity into your work. In this workshop, you will draft your diversity statement and receive feedback as you work through creating it.

This workshop will count toward CIRTL Associate Status. CIRTL participants must be present during the workshop to receive credit.

Developing Intercultural Competence
March 24 | 9AM-12PM

Working in today’s diverse workforce requires collaborating with people from multiple backgrounds and cultures. Utilizing the Intercultural Development Inventory, this workshop will help us understand our own awareness of difference and how that frames our interactions and engagement with others in our increasingly diverse work environments and communities.

Participants will be required to complete the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) by March 16. After registration closes, participants will receive additional information about the IDI and log-in credentials to take the assessment on intercultural competence. This workshop will only be offered face to face due to the interactive nature of the programming.

Public Speaking and Presentations
March 24 | 1PM-4PM

This workshop will help you develop skills to effectively give presentations and improve your public speaking skills. We will begin with a presentation about public speaking in academic and non-academic settings, followed by an interactive session where students will have a chance to give a short, 5-minute presentation and then receive feedback from their peers. Students will need to prepare a 5-minute presentation for this workshop. It can be over any topic, and students will be able to use a PowerPoint if they submit it ahead of time.

Teaching Statements
March 24 | 1PM-4PM

Writing a teaching statement for academic jobs asks you to think critically about how you teach and why. In this workshop, you will draft your own teaching statement and have an opportunity to get feedback from others on the ideas you express.

This workshop will count toward CIRTL Associate Status. CIRTL participants must be present during the workshop to receive credit.
