Each month during the school year, ICMEE is going to recommend and highlight a racial justice book for educators. For September, we recommend: “Teaching for Black Lives,” edited by Dyan Watson, Jesse Hagopian and Wayne Au and published by Rethinking Schools.

“Teaching for Black Lives” was published in 2018 and consists of 50 short chapters separated into five sections. This format is especially helpful for us all right now as our work as educators during the pandemic does not always leave a great deal of time for us to spend reading long chapters. But, don’t let the short nature of the chapters fool you. Each chapter digs into important ideas and issues and provides meaningful fuel for thought as we work towards racial justice in our educational practices.

The five sections of the book are:
- Making Black Lives Matter in Our Schools
- Enslavement, Civil Rights and Black Liberation
- Gentrification, Displacement and Anti-Blackness
- Discipline, The School-to-Prison Pipeline, and Mass
Incarceration
- Teaching Blackness, Loving Blackness and
Exploring Identity
We highly recommend this important text and would love to hear your thoughts!
