Communications Manager, Big Ten Network

The Communications Manager uses various proactive tactics to communicate positive BTN messages and create attention for BTN and its programming, including pitching stories, using social media and offering talent interviews.

Responsibilities:
• Writes press releases and other relevant materials to communicate BTN messages. Distributes all approved releases to media, bloggers, message board operators, sports information directors, alumni associations, and other relevant university entities.
• Creates public relations opportunities and program publicity for the network using existing management, programming, and marketing/branding personnel and strategies; receives and responds to written and verbal inquiries from the press regarding the network. Coordinates responses with Vice President, Communications and University Relations and other relevant stakeholders to ensure consistency with the corporate message and branding strategies.
• Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with radio, television and newspaper organizations, bloggers and message board operators, as well as school sports information directors and other relevant university representatives.
• Manages BTN's Customer Service operation, working with vendor to maximize efficient response strategies and with internal personnel to develop messaging consistent with BTN priorities and manages Football Saturday operations to help fans find their games.
• Disseminates press clippings and blog reports, and manages press distribution lists.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree - degree in journalism with an emphasis on public relations is preferred
• Minimum of 5-7 years professional experience in public relations, with a proven ability to develop and maintain successful working relationships with media groups
• Strong interest and/or experience in sports/cable industry preferred
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential
• Experience with standard public relations practices and social media required
• Knowledge of AP style required
• Good organizational and project coordination skills are necessary
• Ability to both take direction and self-start; adaptable to changing circumstances
• Positive attitude and enthusiasm required; must be a team player
• Understanding of branding, marketing and education
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook is needed
