The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) is a local Azerbaijani nonprofit organization whose mission is to defend journalists and work to improve freedom of expression and the basic human rights situation in Azerbaijan. Founded in 2006, IRFS’s main projects are Objective TV, an online news channel offering human rights news from Azerbaijan, journalist safety and training initiatives, and media monitoring. IRFS has applied to host a youth multimedia center beginning in 2012.

IRFS seeks a qualified candidate for a three month internship position to work on the Objective TV project. The intern will work with all members of the Objective TV staff including cameramen and technical team, anchors, and journalists in the project partner Turan News Agency. The intern will report to the Objective TV project leader and the IRFS director.

Although IRFS is not a well-established, international news organization such as ABC, CNN, or the BBC, this opportunity will provide different advantages. The intern to work in a small team (the entire IRFS organization has 25 employees), get an in-depth look at a human rights organization operating in a hostile environment, and play a central role in the development of its media project. The intern will be able to make a central contribution to an organization and will be given far more responsibility for shaping the direction of the media outlet than in a traditional internship.

Specifically, the intern will:
-work with journalists to pick suitable stories, develop more in-depth and investigative reporting
-develop strategy to improve the effectiveness and presentation of its online news
-work with the Objective TV website http://www.obyektiv.tv
-write and produce video reports
-work with Objective TV’s daily news reports, Difficult Questions program, and Word on the Street vox pop program.

experience required:
Bachelor’s degree in media, social science or appropriate technical field
Knowledge of either Russian, Azeri, or Turkish is preferred.
Ability to prepare and present information related to media
Strong writing skills and knowledge of journalism ethics
Basic experience with video editing software and television media production
Strong writing skills and journalism ethics
Strong interpersonal skills.
