It’s that time of year again. Loads of salt are coming in, plows are getting dusted off, snow plans are being reviewed, and your annual winter employee meeting is being planned. Adequate preparation for the winter season is vital in so many ways. As always, keeping public works employees and the public safe are our top priorities. Having all of your equipment checks complete can save you important down time during a storm and could also help ensure the safety of your equipment operator. Think about winter safety and first-aid kits for every vehicle, seasonal personal protective equipment, route maps, and good communication protocols. Letting the operators become intimately familiar with his or her route is definitely time well spent. This is also a good time of year to refresh your contracts with private snow removal companies as well. Contractors can sure make a difference when a big storm comes. We have all been here before, but it seems like every year brings new challenges. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best! Have a great winter!
