Whether it is your own crews placing concrete or a contractor, be a good consumer and insist on a durable product. In particular, too much of our sidewalk, curbing, and other common elements are failing prematurely as a result of too much water in the mix, adding water during finishing, finishing the surface too soon, inadequate curing, and other factors.
We are expected to build high quality concrete elements and the good news is that we can. Like many other examples, the construction practices we employ can be a determinant factor in how well and how long these investments perform for us. This workshop is basic and intended for those with minimal or even no experience with concrete. However, those with greater experience are welcome to attend and contribute to the discussion. Topics will include a basic understanding of concrete properties and mixes, an examination of several failure modes, specifications for good results, temperature effects, and testing methods.
