Tomasz Szemberg, Pedagogical University of Cracow
Finding Fruit in the Mathematical Orchard
The topic of arrangements of lines and points is a long studied one, going back at least to the times of Pappus in antiquity. A question known as the Orchard Problem posed at the beginning of the 19th century concerns existence of certain arrangements with prescribed incidences relating the lines and points. It has prompted a lot of research in combinatorics, algebra and geometry. After discussing the original problem and its solutions in detail, I will pass to some variations involving colored points and lines and generalizations to fields of definition other than the real numbers. Szemberg will also explain how combinatorial extremality for line arrangements comes up in very recent problems in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.

Local Heroes
In August of 2014, ISIS started a campaign of genocide against the Yezidi people, a religious minority in Northern Iraq. In towns across the U.S., including Lincoln, Yezidis started getting calls for help from friends and relatives trapped in ISIS’ line of fire. Hadi Pir, Laila Khoudeida, Haider Elias, and Murad Ismael got these calls, and sprang into action. They went to Washington, DC, and their calls for the U.S. government to act led them to consulting with the Department of Defense on the coordination of airstrikes against ISIS. After the airstrikes stopped, they founded Yazda, a global organization that advocates for protection and justice for Yezidis. They will share their stories in a panel discussion and a question and answer session moderated by UNL’s Forsythe Family Program on Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs.

Only certain languages are offered. The NSEP Boren Scholarship and Fellowship programs support the study of critical languages abroad specifically in regions and countries outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The focus of the Boren is on geographical areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. White Right: Meeting the Enemy
Movies that Matter Film Festival
OLLI Movies that Matter uses the power of documentary films to educate, inform and create dialogue. The series of documentaries selected this coming year focus on important current and challenging social issues of our time. A moderator will introduce each film and facilitate discussion with local experts. In this Emmy-winning documentary, acclaimed Muslim filmmaker Deeyah Khan travels to the U.S. from the U.K. to meet U.S. neo-Nazis and white nationalists face to face. Using skills that are part investigate journalist and part psychotherapist, she seeks to learn what drives such hatred and forces people to face her, their so called enemy. With the far-right gaining ground in German elections, hate crime rising in the U.K. and divisive populist rhetoric infecting political and public discourse across western democracies, “White Right” asks why. Free. Open to the public. Membership is not required.
