Advising Updates

Hello Math Majors,

Welcome to the Spring 2020 semester! This is the start of a new year and a new decade at UNL, and it is the start of a group of new classes for you. The first week of classes can be pretty chaotic, so please be patient with everyone as they find their classrooms and help people get settled.

I have a very important update about advising for the Math major. Dr. Petronela Radu is taking a sabbatical for the Spring 2020 semester, so she will not be handling the faculty advising duties for the Spring 2020 semester. Dr. Glenn Ledder has stepped up to fill the role of faculty advisor for the Spring 2020 semester. Dr. Ledder has been with the Math Department for many years, so he is very knowledgeable about Advanced Math classes, the Math major's requirements and options, and the opportunities that are available to you as Math majors. He also has some great information about how to study for and succeed in Math classes, so I strongly recommend that you meet with him during the Spring 2020 semester if you need assistance or if you have questions.

While there will be a change in the faculty advisor for a semester, I am not going anywhere, so you can still come visit me. During the first week of classes, I will be keeping busy with questions about enrolling in classes and changes to spring schedules. This is why I only take walk-in meetings during the first week of the semester. If you have a question about your spring semester classes or you want to make sure that you are on track for a May 2020 graduation, please come visit me a walk-in meeting before the end of the day on Tuesday, January 21 as this is the last day to freely add or drop courses for the spring semester.

The first week of classes is a great time to review your syllabi and create a calendar of important dates for the upcoming semester. This calendar would then serve as a tool to keep you up-to-date on the important course events that happen during the spring semester. It will also point out weeks during the semester where you may have several courses with important projects, quizzes, or exams. This will allow you to plan ahead on your studying and work schedule. If you have never created a calendar like this before, I would be happy to help you do so. Along side this calendar, I would also encourage you to create a weekly schedule that includes all of your important daily and weekly items. Students who plan out their course times, work times, study times, and a schedule of sleep, meals, and downtime find it easier to accomplish all of the important work that they need to get done. Setting up a schedule early in the semester is going to maximize the benefit that you can get from it. Again if you have never created a schedule like this before, I would also be happy to help you do so.

@huskers.unl.edu Email Address

Starting this past summer, ALL University email messages are going to your @huskers.unl.edu email address regardless of your email preferences on MyRed. You MUST check your @huskers.unl.edu email address regularly to stay up-to-date with important announcements from the University. If you would like more information about this change, please visit https://its.unl.edu/helpcenter/student-email-migration/ and review the current student tab of information. All students will be expected to be reviewing their @huskers.unl.edu email address, so if you miss an important piece of information sent to this email, you will still be held responsible for it. If you know your fellow classmates haven't switched over to using their @huskers.unl.edu email address, PLEASE give them this information.

Thanks,
Doug
