MATHEMATICS MAJOR SPOTLIGHT

Student Name: August McClenahan
Major: Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering
Year in School: Senior

Where are you from?

I grew up in Omaha and then in the middle of college [career] my family moved to Valencia, California. Sometimes I don't really know how to answer that question. I guess I am from both now, more or less.

What gets you excited about Math?

Good question. I get very excited when thinking about proofs. I know that proofs are not the most popular things among undergraduates in the math major; however, I truly enjoy the rigor and challenge they bring. There is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment after spending a few days stuck on a proof and finally figuring it out. It makes me feel like I actually conquered something.

Favorite math class or instructor? Why?

Very hard to choose, and honestly it is a tie between Honors Calculus 3 with Dr. Walker, and Elementary Analysis with Dr. Pitts. Both of those classes and those instructors pushed me to a greater understanding of different areas of math. Those classes were hard, took a lot of energy and time, but from that challenge I learned more than most other math classes. Such rewarding classes and professors who pushed me to become a better student and mathematician.

What are you excited about doing after graduation?

I am excited to work! I have a job lined up at an aerospace company, and I am extremely excited to be part of a team that helps to push the envelope of technology. It feels immensely rewarding to know that the projects I work on will help push the human race forward!

What is a goal you have accomplished as a Husker?

I wanted to study abroad more than once, and I am extremely fortunate to have been able to do that! I was able to study abroad in both Singapore and South Korea on exchange programs. What an amazing, eye opening, experience! I am so extremely thankful to go to a University that allows their students to create their own experience and grow through unique opportunities.

What do you hope to cross off your “bucket list” in the next few years?

I want to take a road trip from San Diego to Vancouver on Highway 1! That would be a beautiful road trip to take!
