Advising Updates

Mr. Doug Pellatz
Mr. Doug Pellatz

Hello Math Majors,

We have made it to the end of the Spring 2020 semester. After your final exams end this week, it is a great time to reflect upon the spring semester. I know this semester was very different than any previous semester that you have experienced, but there are still lessons to be learned that will benefit you going forward. Things to ponder: What went well this semester? What didn't go well this semester? What did you learn that surprised you? Were there any subjects that you would like to learn more about? If you would like to discuss the answers to these questions, I would be happy to meet with you this summer. I also look forward to being able to connect with you in-person this fall, and I hope you have a good summer.

Pass/No Pass Policy
As you should be aware of by now, the University has made several important changes to the Pass/No Pass policy for the Spring 2020 semester. The biggest change is that the deadline to change a course to the Pass/No Pass grading basis is now Friday, May 29th, which will be after final letter grades are posted to MyRed by your course instructors. The University has created a webpage of questions and answers about the Pass/No Pass policy changes that is available here: https://covid19.unl.edu/undergraduate-pass-no-pass-qa.

I know that many of you will likely want to change one, several, or all of your Spring 2020 semester courses to the Pass/No Pass grading basis. You will need to contact to me to change a course to the Pass/No Pass grading basis as I must submit a form for you to make the change happen. However, I strongly recommend that you wait until after your final letter grades are posted to MyRed as this will allow you to know whether you are receiving a Pass or a No Pass grade.

Spring 2020 courses that are completed with a Pass grade will count toward your degree, major, and minor requirements, and they will not count toward any of the Pass/No Pass limitations of your degree, major, or minor. In addition, Spring 2020 courses taken for a Pass/No Pass grade will be used in grade replacement calculations. It is the University's and my hope that the flexibility to take courses on the Pass/No Pass grading basis will allow the changes to the Spring 2020 semester due to COVID-19 to not affect your long term plans.

If you have any questions about the changes to the Pass/No Pass policy, please do not hesitate to contact me. Remember, you must contact me by 5 pm on Friday, May 29, 2020 if you want a Spring 2020 course changed to the Pass/No Pass grading basis.

Summer Courses and Updating your Schedule:

With the shift to remote learning only for summer, if you were planning to take classes this summer, those classes may have changed or may be cancelled. Departments should have made their final decisions and adjustments by now, so please be sure to check your summer schedule to confirm what you are enrolled in. If you have any questions, reach out to me.

@huskers.unl.edu Email Address

Starting last summer, ALL University email messages are going to your @huskers.unl.edu email address regardless of your email preferences on MyRed. You MUST check your @huskers.unl.edu email address regularly to stay up-to-date with important announcements from the University. If you would like more information about this change, please visit https://its.unl.edu/helpcenter/student-email-migration/ and review the current student tab of information. All students will be expected to be reviewing their @huskers.unl.edu email address, so if you miss an important piece of information sent to this email, you will still be held responsible for it. If you know your fellow classmates haven't switched over to using their @huskers.unl.edu email address, PLEASE give them this information.

Thanks,
Doug

Doug's Summer 2020 Advising Hours

During the summer semester, I will be advising remotely until at least the end of May and by appointment only. I will have appointments available every weekday, but there may be times when my availability is impacted by New Student Enrollment. You can schedule a meeting with me by using this link to MyPlan (click here for additional instructions about scheduling a meeting), by calling me at 402-472-4319, or by emailing me at dpellatz@unl.edu. There are two ways for us to meet virtually:

Zoom (on-line video/audio or phone) – after you schedule your meeting, I will send you instructions for getting connected. You do not have to have a video and audio connection, but it would be ideal for the best communication including screen sharing. You can also call in using Zoom if you do not have access to a computer or device capable of running the Zoom app.

E-mail – prior to our arranged appointment time, please e-mail me your questions from your @huskers.unl.edu account. I will respond to your initial questions, then we can exchange messages throughout our allotted time. If we run out of time, we can schedule a follow up. Continued emailing outside of your appointment time may have delayed response due to an increase in email traffic, but I will respond as quickly as possible.

You will be required to specify in your meeting request what format you prefer for our meeting. I look forward to connecting and helping you plan for summer or fall classes and stay on track for graduation. Stay current on UNL’s response to COVID-19 by regularly visiting https://covid19.unl.edu/students. Dr. Ledder's Spring/Summer 2020 Advising Hours

Dr. Ledder is also happy to see students by appointment as well using email, telephone, Skype, or Zoom. You can schedule an appointment with him by emailing him at gledder@unl.edu.
