Putnam Competition Information

The annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition will be held this year on Saturday, December 1. This is a nation-wide mathematical competition which is open to all undergraduates.

There is NO CHARGE to participate in this competition.

The emphasis is on problems which require elementary methods but some originality to be solved. Freshmen and sophomores are especially encouraged to enter the competition.

Interested students are encouraged to participate in the Putnam seminar which takes place at 2:30 on Fridays in Avery 351, or send an email to Kyungyong Lee (klee24@unl.edu) or Thomas Kindred (thomas.kindred@unl.edu) with subject line Putnam, indicating their interest in participating. The first Putnam seminar will be held on the September 28th.

Midwest Mathematics Inclusion and Diversity Workshop for Undergraduates (MMIDWU)

The Midwest Mathematics Inclusion and Diversity Workshop for Undergraduates (MMIDWU) will take place at Iowa State University during the weekend of October 20 - 21, 2018 and is inviting undergraduates in mathematics from regional schools, including UNL, to participate. The workshop has three goals:

1. To develop the participants' knowledge and mathematical skills by featuring six faculty speakers giving talks on their area of expertise, each prefaced with graduate student introductory sessions.

2. To bring awareness to and reflect on experiences of underrepresented groups in math through awareness sessions;

3. To allow students to learn about graduate programs in mathematics through panel discussions and immersion during the workshop.

Any interested students should register as soon as possible at the following website: https://sites.google.com/iastate.edu/mmidwu18/home.
