Stephanie Casey, PhD, and Andrew Ross, PhD, of the Transformative Eastern Michigan Mathematics Education MTEP team are featured in a recent episode of the Mathematics Teacher Educator Podcast entitled “Developing Equity Literacy and Critical Statistical Literacy in Secondary Mathematics Preservice Teachers.” This episode centers on teacher education curriculum materials for introductory statistics developed as a part of the MODULE(S2) (Mathematics of Doing, Understanding, Learning and Educating for Secondary Schools) project that grew out of MTEP. These materials include integrated foci on developing equity literacy and critical statistical literacy that were developed in response to a lack of preservice secondary mathematics education materials that develop equity literacy. The episode includes an overview of the materials’ design plus a detailed look at one activity regarding racial demographics and tracking in high school STEM courses. Professors Casey and Ross present evidence regarding the positive impact of these materials and discuss implications for mathematics teacher educators working to develop equity literacy together with content knowledge.
