Highlights of MTEP's progress

The most recent phase of the partnership, dubbed MTEP 2.0, was launched in Fall 2020 with 43 campuses collaboratively working to transform their preparation of secondary mathematics teachers using the networked improvement community (NIC) model. The project received National Science Foundation (NSF) funding for an Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant to scale up and study the NIC beginning October 2022. A few highlights of the past year of work follow:

  • Held a pre-conference to the 2023 Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) Conference in January in collaboration with the Get The Facts Out project.
  • Held monthly NIC-Casts (interactive workshops) on various issues related to improving secondary mathematics teacher preparation. See past NIC-Casts on OpenCanvas; login required.
  • Launched the network of “change agents” who are leading improvement efforts at the team or campus level and began tracking the exciting work that they are doing.
  • Held a series of informational sessions for those interested in joining MTEP 2.0, with a special focus on minority-serving institutions.
  • Held an “Improvement Science Boot Camp” in June for those looking to join MTEP 2.0 or learn more about the NIC design.
  • Launched a new website—http://www.mtep.info—with new branding and a new design.
  • Held a meeting with our national advisory board in May, which provided useful input for moving forward.
  • Collected MTEP 2.0-wide data, including the number of teacher candidates completing MTEP 2.0 programs, an annual program progress survey completed by each team, and an annual report from each team on the progress they have made over the past year.
  • Conducted a series of virtual site visits with a number of the MTEP 2.0 teams. Analysis of the massive data set is ongoing!
  • Engaged in cross-hub strategic planning meetings in June and July.
  • Presented at a number of conferences, including the AMTE Annual Conference, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Education (SIAM-ED) Annual Conference, the International Conference of the Mathematics Education for the Future Project, the NSF IUSE Summit, and the US Virtual Sessions of the 14th International Conference on Mathematical Education (ICME-14).
  • Published articles in Mathematics Teacher Educator, AMTE Connections, Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, PRIMUS, and the book Preparing Quality Teachers: Advances in Clinical Practice.
  • The website includes a bibliography of MTEP publications and presentations over the past 10+ years—see http://www.mtep.info/bib.

We have much more planned for the coming year, continuing to scale up the work of the MTEP 2.0 network. See the events already scheduled in each issue of the newsletter, and stay tuned for more by signing up at http://www.mtep.info/join.
