A previous newsletter article related the progress that MTEP 2.0 programs have made in achieving MTEP’s Guiding Principles for Secondary Mathematics Teacher Preparation, an elaboration of the Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics from the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. These results came from the MTEP 2.0 Program Progress Survey, which programs that are members of the MTEP 2.0 Networked Improvement Community are asked to complete each spring.

Here we take a somewhat different view—what progress did teams make from the 2022 survey to the 2023 survey? Figure 1 shows how the rankings changed for each standard while Figure 2 looks at overall progress across the teams for each standard. As you consider these data, you might ask:

  • Given the improvement efforts undertaken by the programs, why didn’t we see more progress over the past year?
  • What factors, for example changes in state policies or other external factors, impede efforts to improve?
  • What progress is your program making in achieving its aim? What new challenges may need to be considered?
The 2024 Program Progress Survey was sent out on March 1 and is due May 31. Completing the survey provides an excellent opportunity for programs to take stock of how they are progressing. An honest assessment of progress will be helpful in discussions of any adjustments in aims, drivers, and PDSA cycles that may be needed in the coming year.
