Equity and Social Justice Discussion Group Session: Liberatory STEM Pedagogy: Empowering Students through Justice-Oriented STEM Education
Facilitator: Gideon Weinstein
Liberatory STEM pedagogy centers on leveraging STEM tools to both reveal and challenge inequitable power dynamics within society. This approach provides a framework for teaching STEM subjects in a way that promotes critical thinking about social, political, and economic issues, while simultaneously equipping students with the skills to address these issues practically. This session will provide an overview of the two core tenets of liberatory STEM pedagogy, offer practical strategies for implementation in mathematics classrooms, and present examples of liberatory STEM lessons in mathematics. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how to integrate justice-oriented themes into their STEM teaching practices and inspire students to use STEM knowledge as a tool for social change.
