The Influence of Education Research on Math Ed Policy
In this blog from Just Equations, founder and executive director Pamela Burdman discusses the growing influence of education research on mathematics education policies, particularly in higher education. Over recent decades, research has shown that placing students with weak math preparation into college-level courses with support, rather than into remedial courses, leads to better outcomes. Burdman explores studies that examine detracking initiatives, remedial education, and the effectiveness of college-level courses in improving student success. She also raises questions about the best approaches for underprepared students, the role of prerequisite courses, and the need for ongoing research to refine math education policies.
Advocacy Corner: Each article will feature a few ways you and your programs can advocate for your programs and the profession. With the ever-changing political landscape, it’s important our voices, the voices of the teachers we prepare and the students they impact, are elevated and heard. The ideas presented each are only suggestions and do not represent an endorsement of one organization, app, or tool over another. Have a favorite way you advocate? Please send additional suggestions for this list to mleadabrand2@unl.edu.
