Michael Eric Dyson addresses race head on in his book “Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America.” We will explore the role of race in America and discuss his book. Dyson, who structures this book as a religious service, asks Americans to examine white privilege and black subjugation.

For as long as humans have organized into societies, they have thought about possible improvements to those societies, seeking the ideal society. Is a society of absolute fairness, ultimate justice and perfect human happiness possible? We will have an overview of utopian thought and will discuss several key literary works that imagine such societies.
