Find support to overcome disordered eating

An eating disorder is not a disorder of choice, but rather a genetic predisposition that can be triggered by any number of life-changing events, such as the transition to college. Early intervention is critical to reducing further impact of the illness. If your student needs assistance, Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to offer support.

Here are a few things to remember:

  • Set aside time to talk.
Find a time to share your concerns with your scholar and leave yourself open and available as a supportive listener.
  • Understand that overcoming an eating disorder is not a simple task.
When voicing your concerns, try to avoid “you” statements. Instead, focus on “I” statements.
  • Provide positive support.
Avoid talk about food, weight, diets and body shapes. Instead, focus the conversation on strengths.

In conjunction with the UNL Nebraska Eating Disorder Network student organization, CAPS will facilitate several educational events for students during Eating Disorder Awareness Week, February 23-29.

If your student needs help with eating disorders or other mental health concerns, encourage them to contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 402-472-7450. A trained counselor can assist your student in developing strategies to address concerns.
