On Dec. 9, the University Health Center celebrated the groundbreaking of a new building it will share with UNMC College of Nursing’s Lincoln Division.

More than 150 people attended the ceremony and reception held at UNL’s Van Brunt Visitors Center, including representatives from Nebraska Medicine, UNL, UNMC and the University of Nebraska Foundation, as well as families of the nursing facility’s primary donors.

Among the event’s many speakers were Juan Franco, vice chancellor for Student Affairs; and Dr. Harris Frankel, Nebraska Medicine senior vice president and chief medical officer, who described the history of Nebraska Medicine’s partnership with UNL since acquiring management of UHC and highlighted ways it has enhanced services offered to the UNL community.

Approximately 54,000 square feet of the new 107,000 square-foot building will replace the current health center for UNL with a state-of-the-art clinic that will allow Counseling and Psychological Services, Dental and Physical Therapy to expand their footprint to accommodate the growing demand of the student population. The building also will include flexible space that can easily be rearranged based on the future needs of the building.

The new facility, which is funded by both state and private funds, is being built in Lincoln along Antelope Valley Parkway, near 19th and S streets. Construction began in November and is scheduled to conclude in mid-2018.
