Cedar Point Biological Station
This course will explore various aspects of forensic investigation in an underwater environment. Often times, crimes may occur within or near an aquatic environment or evidence of a medico-legal interest may be deposited in an underwater environment. Human and non-human remains are extremely important parts of investigations. The first week will focus on basic scuba skills (Open Water certification will be given from the organization Professional Association of Dive Instructors - PADI) and the second an third week will focus on forensic investigation skills and scenario-based training. Permission will be required for registration because a medical pre-screening needs to be completed because while safe, there is always an inherent risk in diving which requires a doctor's permission if there are any questions checked yes on the medical form (not indicating yes on the questions will result in expulsion from the class). Prior to registration, contact the instructor at wbelcher2@unl.edu for this medical screening form. The course will be conducted as a "residence" camp at the Cedar Point Biological Station.
COST/SUPPLIES
Tuition: 3 credit hours
Supply Fee: $200 (covers rental equipment of wet suits & tanks); other equipment (regulators, dive computers, & buoyancy control devices) will be provided; students will be required to supply their own masks, snorkel, and fins/booties
SCUBA certification fees: ~$100
Cedar Point Biological Station Fees: $750 (includes lodging and meals)
