Jesse Korus, survey geologist and doctoral student in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, will defend his dissertation at 1 p.m., April 15 in Bessey Hall, Room 203.

Korus' dissertation is titled, "Planform Asymmetry and Stratigraphic Variability of River Delta Deposits: Holocene Examples and Case Studies of the Ferron Sandstone (Cretaceous), Utah, U.S.A." His adviser is Christopher Fielding.

Abstract:

River delta deposits are important geological archives and they host vast groundwater, petroleum, and mineral resources, but controls on spatial heterogeneity are poorly understood. My research examines deltas from a literature review of Holocene examples worldwide and field studies of Cretaceous deltaic rocks in Utah. I present new conceptual models to improve the interpretation of controls on spatial complexity and the prediction of heterogeneity.
