David Wishart, professor of geography, will be teaching Geography 935: Seminar in Historical Geography in the fall 2015 semester.

"The topic is the Great Plains region," Wishart said. "I will lead the first half of the semester, giving presentations from my own published research on the Great Plains."

Those presentations will cover topics such as: recognizing the Great Plains region, early Indian geographies, Indian dispossession, spatial and ecological dimensions of the Fur Trade, the Euro-American settlement process on the Plains, among others.

"As a historical geographer, my perspectives will focus on space, place and ecology," Wishart said.

The seminar is open to graduate students of all disciplines, especially to those with an interest in the Great Plains. The time and day of the seminar will be determined by the students’ schedules.

Students who register for the seminar would have two responsibilities, Wishart said. They must contribute to in-class discussions, and present a report to the class and complete a scholarly paper on a selected research topic relating to the Great Plains.

"I would like very much to have an interdisciplinary group in this seminar," Wishart said. "Geography, which studies both the physical environment and the human environment – and especially the relations between the two – is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of topics and approaches. And, it will be an opportunity for students to get ahead on their theses and dissertations."

Students interested in the seminar should contact Wishart at dwishart1@unl.edu or 402-472-3576.
