Checklist for designing inclusive courses

Accessibility is one aspect of course inclusivity, and in the same way street features like curb cuts were initially intended to help specific disabled users but turned out to be useful for everyone, accessible courses improve learning for all students.

Designing or redesigning with accessibility in mind doesn’t need to be onerous or labor-intensive, but it can be challenging to know exactly what needs to be done. To address this problem, Eyde Olson and Michael Jolly, both instructional designers with the Center for Transformative Teaching, worked with select faculty along with Sam Goodin, director of services for students with disabilities, to create the Accessibility Checklist as part of a 2018 College of Arts and Sciences Instructional Improvement Fund grant.

The checklist was designed as one of the educational resources developed by the "Improving Accessibility Awareness: Resources and Training for Arts & Sciences Faculty" project. Its purpose is to help design courses and materials that are compliant with accessibility laws, standards, and guidelines and it is now available for download by instructors to explore and apply to their own course development.
