The Center for Transformative Teaching announces the first-ever funding awards from its Teaching Grant Program. The successful applicants in the Seeding Student Success category receiving a grant offering up to $50,000 are:

  • Catherine Fraser Riehle, Erica DeFrain, Debbie Minter and Rachel Azima from University Libraries and English — “Writing Information Literacy: A Collaborative Effort to Support Intentional Integration of Information Literacy at the Foundation”

  • Josh Brummer from Math — “Developing a Cross-Disciplinary Learning Assistant Support Program”

  • Trisha Vickrey, Morgan Balabanoff, Jason Kautz, Mark Griep and Eric Malina from Chemistry — “A Multi-Faceted Approach to Increasing Engagement and Learning in a High-Enrollment General Chemistry Course”


Applications for grants of up to $1,000 were also offered in the categories of Pedagogic Intervention, Incubation Fund and Student-Faculty Collaboration. The CTT was able to fund 12 applications. The successful applicants are Kathy Castle, Communication Studies; Carolyn Brown-Kramer, Psychology; Judith Turk, School of Natural Resources; Kevin Pitt, Special Education; Vanessa Gorman, History; Suzanne Kemp, Colin Dike and Megan McKee, Special Education; Bud Shenefelt, Architecture; Erin Bauer and Justine LaViolette, Entomology; Patrice McMahon and Valerie Jones, Political Science; Kate Anania, Art History; Ash Smith, Emerging Media Arts; Kristin Malek, Ally Norris, Emily Zetterman and Lillian Nguyen, Nutrition and Health Sciences; and Yalem Teshome, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

"A very big thank you to all who applied, and heartfelt congratulations to those who were successful. These important projects will help us in our mission to improve the student experience and drive student success in all the colleges and schools at UNL," said Nick Monk, director of the CTT. "We received close to $500,000 in applications and would have liked to fund many more than we could given the quality of the proposals. There will be another call in the fall, and we look forward to another round of innovative and exciting ideas."
