Course evaluation filenames for downloaded reports have been shortened in response to filename length issues. The long filenames made it difficult to store files on OneDrive and SharePoint, which have a limit of 400 characters for a full file path (folder names plus filename) to upload and store a file.
In particular, the size of the course title was making the filenames longer as it included the course name, course title, code, number, section number, and semester of the course. If the course was cross listed, it made the filename even longer. New filenames include the course unique ID and the instructor's name, with the unique ID being either a standalone course or a child section of a cross-listed course.
Example filename before:
MECH-492-401.1255SPECIALTOPICSMECH492SEC401Summer2025-SPECIALTOPICSMECH892SEC401Summer2025_InstructorName
Example filename after:
MECH-492-401.1255_MECH-892-401.1255_ InstructorName
This Year and Term Identifier reference from the University Registrar can help identify a semester by its term code.
In addition to shorter filenames, faculty can avoid file path character limitation issues by saving files closer to the top of the folder structure and shortening the names of folders and embedded folders.
