Deadline for COBRE internal competition is Aug. 24

The Office of Research and Economic Development is conducting an internal competition to identify a team to develop the UNL proposal that will be submitted to NIH's Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence program in early 2013.

NIH allows only one application per institution per fiscal year. Faculty interested in developing a COBRE proposal must submit a notification of intent to submit by Aug. 24 via NUgrant. More information is available on the Limited Submissions website by searching August 2012.

The COBRE program is designed to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure by establishing an interdisciplinary, and sometimes multi-institutional, center and enhancing the ability of junior investigators to compete for external research funding. This program currently funds UNL's Nebraska Center for Virology and Redox Biology Center.

COBRE applications must have a thematic scientific focus supported by basic, clinical and/or translational research approaches. Proposed centers must be led by an established biomedical or behavioral investigator who has: 1) an active research laboratory; 2) a record of peer-reviewed funding related to the proposed center's scientific theme; and 3) a history of administrative leadership and mentoring. COBRE program details are available in the NIH program solicitation.

By early October, the vice chancellor for research and economic development will select the proposal to be submitted by the Feb. 21, 2013, application deadline.
