The genre-twisting documentary “Stories We Tell” opens today at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Also continuing at the Ross is "The East." Both films are rated PG-13 and play through July 11.
Directed by Oscar-nominated writer/director Sarah Polley, “Stories We Tell” investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers. Polley playfully interviews and interrogates a cast of characters of varying reliability, eliciting refreshingly candid (yet mostly contradictory) answers to the same questions.
As each relates their version of the family mythology, present-day reflections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of the group’s mother.
In "The East," a covert female operative infiltrates an anarchist faction that stages clandestine attacks on major corporations. The operative finds her mission compromised when she falls for the group's charismatic leader.
