Environmental Laboratory Instrumentation and Methods (1 credit)
NRES 439 & 839
Spring Semesters
Instructors: Dr. Daniel Snow & Victoria Dey
Course Delivery: Canvas and Water Sciences Laboratory on East Campus

Course provides introduction to technologies such as spectroscopy, discrete automated colorimetry, chromatography and mass spectrometry used for environmental testing. Includes hands-on training in calibration, operation and sample analysis, proper use of analytical balance, volumetric glassware and micropipettes, creating and maintaining a laboratory notebook, and development and understanding standard operational procedures. Students will participate in advanced in-lab training in analytical laboratory techniques and operation of advanced instrumentation used in commercial and research environmental laboratories.
By the end of the course the students will:
• Have a solid understanding of unique requirements for environmental laboratory methods
• Understand the importance and practice of lab safety housekeeping requirements
• Understand environmental laboratory practices and standard operating procedures
• Complete laboratory training in preparation for student research
• Prepare samples and equipment for testing
• Plan and execute environmental laboratory tests

*Prerequisites: CHEM 106A and CHEM 106L or CHEM 110A and CHEM 110L or equivalent.

Students taking NRES 839 for graduate credit will provide a summary report and presentation describing at least 3 technologies, theory, background, and limitations of a chosen environmental measurement.
