Presentation Abstract
Local governments, community planners, transportation engineers and residents have actively advocated for the promotion of an active and pedestrian-friendly setting, recognizing its potential to yield numerous advantages, including increased physical activity, enhanced health, improved psychological well-being, and greater environmental sustainability. The enhancement of walkable environments stands as a potent strategy for fostering healthier and safer communities that encourage residents to lead active lifestyles. In this presentation, we will explore various methods and approaches for assessing and improving walkable environments.
About the Speaker
Dr. Yunwoo Nam is a Professor of Community and Regional Planning within the College of Architecture at the University of NebraskaLincoln. Additionally, he is an affiliated professor of the School of Global Integrative Studies and Geography and a fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska. He
earned his Ph.D in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Nam has been honored with prestigious awards, including the UCGIS (University Consortium for Geographic Information Science)junior faculty award, the Hawthorne Distinguished Faculty Award, and the Hyde Professorship. His areas of expertise includes Spatial analysis using GIS and spatial statistics, active and healthy community, community assessments, urban walkability, urban growth management, and sustainable development.
