Title: Stabilizing Slopes and Soothing Sightlines: Vegetation for Roadside Resilience
Abstract: Roadside vegetation plays a critical role in transportation infrastructure by enhancing safety, reducing erosion, and supporting ecological health. This seminar will explore how plant selection and management influence slope stability, visibility, and stormwater control. We’ll also examine the importance of species diversity and the broader ecosystem services provided by roadside plantings, such as pollinator support. Finally, we’ll discuss practical limitations in vegetation management, including maintenance challenges and practices that promote spread of invasive species. The talk aims to bridge vegetation management principles with engineering applications to promote more resilient and sustainable roadside systems.
All participants will earn 1 Professional Development Hour (PDH). Seminar attendees will receive both the flyer and the presentation slides as documentation. These materials satisfy the recordkeeping requirements of the Nebraska Board of Engineers & Architects for CE credit.
