By the time this newsletter “goes live,” I will have retired after more than four decades working on East Campus. My association with UNL dates back to when I was a student here, which believe it or not, was at the height of the protests against U.S. involvement in the Viet Nam war (yes, that thing you read about in history books – I lived through it!!). Having been around so long, I got to be part of a lot of “firsts,” among which was the PGA Golf Management program. I’ve been the Administrative Coordinator of the Center for Grassland Studies since its formation in 1994. When administrators wanted to establish a PGM program here at UNL, they decided to “position” it within the CGS. So in the early 2000s Drs. Martin Massengale and Terry Riordan and I slugged our way through the PGA of America accreditation process, which took a few years from start to finish. After the program and staff were in place, my role focused on administrative and recruitment support.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most in my association with the program is watching the maturation process of young men and women who come to us just a few months out of high school and leave ready to become PGA Professionals. It’s gratifying seeing our graduates in responsible positions and being successful in careers they enjoy. Turning passions into professions… it’s what we do. I’m not part of the “we” anymore, but I hope to see many of you at the alumni banquet this September (at least… I’ve been told I’ll be invited!).
