Happy Holidays from the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln! I hope this holiday season finds each of you safe, spending quality time with family and friends, and preparing for a wonderful and prosperous 2019. And be careful what you wish for since it might just come true. I wished for a full head of hair and voila! I now have a full head of hair (just kidding of course).
Since our last edition this past summer, our staff and students have been extremely busy and motivated. As you read through our articles, you will find out what our recent graduates are doing and believe me, they are all doing some amazing things. You'll also read experiences from two students who were able to attend this year's National Meeting of the PGA in California. Very exciting times for Gretchen and Nate!
From an academic perspective, our students continue to make great strides in the classroom. During our August graduation, we witnessed Blake Busch and Kurt Karcher receive high academic honors in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources as they both earned "High Distinction" during the graduation ceremonies. Congratulations Blake and Kurt!
Many students found great success on the course since the last edition of our newsletter. Read about our students who were successful in their Playing Ability Test (PAT), our teams' performance at the CONE Cup and the Jones Cup, and the great accomplishment of Kyle Murray in this fall's Scott Holly Matchplay Championship. Wow...these guys are good!
We also have a very strong cohort this fall which includes solid diversity in our student body. This cohort also benefits from our teaching assistants this fall and will carry over to the spring semester. Nakul and Nate are great assets in our undergraduate teaching program in PGA Golf Management. They both do excellent work.
Our scholarship donors and sponsors continue to invest greatly in our students at the undergraduate level in the program. We thank all these individuals and groups for investing in the next generation of PGA professionals and we look to expand our scholarship program in the coming years to support our students financially as the cost of education continues to increase.
Finally, our program continues to grow internationally. As I am currently writing, Brad Goetsch is on an exploratory study abroad trip to China with colleagues from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and the Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management (HRTM) program. We hope to offer a study abroad opportunity in China to our students during spring break in 2020 and continue to offer our students our study abroad trip to Scotland in the summer of 2021. As golf continues to grow internationally, we want to offer to our students the global opportunities in the golf industry.
All the best for a great 2019 and as always...Fairways and Greens!
