AAA Conference: Call for Proposals

The Academic Advising Association at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is excited to host its 7th Annual Academic Advising Conference on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 9:00am – 3:30pm at UNL’s Innovation Campus.

Please consider submitting a proposal for the AAA Conference, “20/20 Vision: The Future of Advising.”

As the demographics of those entering higher education change, the field of student affairs and those within it will also need to adjust. The 2020 theme will encourage attendees to consider new ways of supporting and empowering our students and colleagues given the generational, demographical, and technological shifts that are impacting our work within higher education.

To best serve our students, student affairs professionals must be willing to reflect on current methods and ways-of-doing that have been successful to determine if they will continue to be most effective as we move to the future. Additionally, we must ask ourselves: How might we, as professionals, need to change our perspectives and strategies to accommodate these shifts? Who are our students, what unique needs do they have, and how do we most effectively address and support those needs? How do we promote the overall wellbeing of our students and student affairs professionals? What might we expect in the coming years within the field, and how do we best prepare? How is our work aligned with the NACADA conceptual, relational, and informational competency components?

The purpose of this conference is to dive into discussion based on the questions posed above and begin generating plans of action for the future. Thus, in an effort to guide conference topics and proposals, the conference committee has identified 3 thematic concentrations:

• Adapting to Emerging Generational Shifts

• Advocating for Health & Well-Being

• Advancing the World of Advising

Proposals are welcome from all colleagues and intercampus cooperation is appreciated. Novice and experienced presenters alike, including graduate students, are encouraged to collaborate and submit concurrent session or poster proposals. We are looking for interactive, innovative, and engaging presentations, panels, and posters that will aid attendees in enhancing their knowledge and skills to promote student and advisor success. Do not feel like you need to be a subject matter expert to present – all of us have the ability to share our ideas or experiences and lead others through discussion and reflection.

All proposals should be submitted online at https://aaa.unl.edu/proposals . The deadline for submission is Monday, December 2, 2019.

Questions can be directed to Marissa Starman, 2020 Conference Proposal Chair (mstarman2@unl.edu, 402.472.2310) or 2020 Conference Co-Chairs, Cheryl Pflueger (cpflueger3@unl.edu, 402.472.3179) and Rachel Wesley (rwesley2@unl.edu, 402.472.2310).
