With Priority Registration wrapped up, your students have an academic plan in place, but as you know, there’s more planning to do. While some students align their academic plans with their career plans, others may need additional support. You can break down the process by encouraging them to:
• Look through internship and job listings in a field of interest to get a sense of what it entails and requires. Handshake (at MyUNL) provides local, national, and international internship and job listings across disciplines to explore.
• Shadow a professional in a role that interests them. In addition to LinkedIn, students can use their current network to find those contacts.
• Volunteer in a field or organization of interest. Direct outreach is most often welcomed, but the Center for Civic Engagement can also help students connect with volunteer opportunities.
• Intern to gain insight, experience and confidence in themselves and their decisions. Again, Handshake (at MyUNL) can help students connect with opportunities in most fields, organizations, and locations they hope to pursue.
Career Coaches are also available to your students to provide support in continuing the process. From self-assessment, decision making, applying for opportunities, and selling their story, Career Coaches guide students through each step.

Your students can find a Career Coach in MyPlan in their success network under Career Development. If your college doesn’t have a career coach, they can work with a University Career Services Coach.
Now that your students have an academic plan, a career plan can naturally follow. You can play an important role in helping connect their academic pursuits to their future career goals. Career Services staff look forward to partnering with you to support students in their career development.
