Music Ensembles undergo change of numbering for Fall 2018

Course subjects and numbers are changing for all music ensembles starting this fall.

The easy part is the numbering. Gone is the cross-listing between 200- and 400-level sections. All groups will have just one number. For example, All-Collegiate Choir is now 341 instead of 241A/441A.

The number of subject codes for each course has also been reduced. Students who are taking ensembles for elective credit will register with the MUEN subject code. These will be found in the MyRED search for classes under Music – Ensembles. MUNM and MUCO will no longer be used for ensembles, which should make it much easier to find true MUNM lecture-based courses.

Music minors and majors will continue to enroll in their one designated ensemble for degree requirement as MUDC each semester. Any additional ensembles would be registered as MUEN. If a minor needs assistance in selecting the appropriate MUDC ensemble, Dr. Peter Lefferts is the advisor for minors.

The Registrar’s office is currently working on this substantial course transition in MyRED. It is expected to be completed in time for priority registration, but if you are working with students early, you may not see the new listings just yet. It would be very helpful if students did not try to enroll in ensembles until the new course numbers are available. The new numbers are reflected on the Glenn Korff School of Music website.

As a reminder, all participants in an ensemble must be registered. In the event that a student is taking multiple ensembles in the same term, it may be possible to enroll in the second (or third) course for zero credit (for example, MUEN 41). The student must first enroll in each ensemble for credit. Permission codes for the zero-level course will be given by the ensemble director, and it is the student’s responsibility to swap courses in MyRED before the end of the drop/add period.

There is a wide array of ensembles to accommodate different interests and skill levels. Some require an audition (or two), while others do not. Students who are thinking about Marching Band or Pep Band for the fall semester will want to start preparing now for the early May auditions. Please direct students to the ensemble website for more details.

In related news, the ensemble commonly known as Campus Orchestra has been formalized. Students of any ability level will be able to enroll in this course without permission. The new course number is MUEN 350.

We greatly appreciate all you do to encourage ensemble participation to students!
