Time Entry for Holiday Closedown - for all leave eligible employees and their supervisors

UNL will be closed beginning Monday, December 23, 2019 through Wednesday, January 1, 2020, except for essential designated operations. All leave eligible employees must submit their leave for this time to their supervisor before Friday, December 20, 2019. If there is a specific need for you to work during the Holiday Closedown, please request approval from your immediate supervisor and notify the CEHS Business Team in advance.

For those who have been employed the entire calendar year, you will use 4 days of floating holiday and 2 days of vacation or unpaid leave for a total of 6 days. For example, a 12-month faculty or staff can enter their request in ESS leave using two entries, Dec 23-24th as vacation and Dec 26-31st as floating holiday. For those who started after February this year, the number of floating holidays you will have earned will be less than 32 hours, this means you will need to use additional vacation or unpaid leave to make up the difference in days to total 6 days leave during the closedown period. Regular Employees are eligible for holiday and floating holiday pay, prorated according to FTE. A regular employee will receive pay for a holiday if the employee is in pay status for the full work shift on the last scheduled workday prior to the holiday AND the first scheduled workday after the holiday. Please consult the business team if you are using unpaid leave to ensure it is entered correctly appropriately.

When choosing between using a floating holiday versus vacation leave, the following should be considered:
• Floating holiday maximum accrual is 32 hours per year. If an employee uses vacation, which would retain a floating holiday, the employee will start 2020with 8 hours of floating holiday. The employee will need to be aware of the four floating holiday accrual dates and use the retained floating holiday to avoid hitting the maximum, which would stop the accrual.
• Vacation maximum accrual is 280 hours; therefore, employees who are close to the maximum may choose to use vacation to avoid hitting the maximum, which would stop the accrual. This would retain the floating holiday as mentioned above.
