As you make donations this holiday season, consider investing in the education of a Nebraska teacher by giving to one of the Center’s fellowships funds at the University Foundation. Whether you are able to give $5 or $50, funds received through the Foundation will help cover tuition costs for teachers enrolled in a Nebraska Math & Science Summer Institutes course.
The NMSSI courses are designed to deepen teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical knowledge to improve student achievement. In 2011, more than 300 Nebraska teachers enrolled in our courses, and we want to continue making these opportunities available to even more teachers.
Tony Hoffman, a teacher at Crofton High School, completed four courses last year. Hoffman said, "The fellowship I received was the reason I could afford to take the courses I did. Being from so far away, it is very expensive being away from home, traveling and paying tuition for a course. Without the fellowships, I could have only taken one course per year due to budget constraints.
"I have not had any courses impact my teaching as much as these NMSSI courses have. Everyday I bring things into my own classroom from the NMSSI courses. I also enjoy now having a network of other teachers to lean on and ask questions of that I did not have before. I have also gained confidence in the math classroom, and this has made me a much better teacher by relating to students and their learning styles. Before NMSSI, I was simply teaching mathematics; I now believe that I am creating life-long learners."
By investing in Nebraska’s teachers, you are helping us strengthen mathematics education for Nebraska’s students.
