Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Computational Sciences Center is inviting applications for a graduate student internship in engineering education to work on an assessment of learning outcomes for federally funded programs for graduate students working in computational sciences.

The Computational Sciences Center hosts summer students through a range of federally-funded internship programs, including the DOE-sponsored Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF), the EERE High Performance Computing Internship, the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, and the NNSA Minority Serving Institution Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP). The center also regularly hosts the National Science Foundation’s Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (NSF-MSGI). These students are incorporated into NREL project teams in computational science, machine learning, and data analytics with a sustainability focus.

NREL seeks to host an intern with a STEM-education background to work with NREL staff to quantify the skills growth and career impact of these federally-funded internship programs. The results will be presented both to NREL management and submitted for peer-reviewed publication. The outcomes of this project will both guide NREL’s efforts to build a skilled, diverse workforce to work on sustainability problems with a computational science component and constitute a unique contribution to the engineering education literature.

Expected tasks include:

  • Survey of relevant research in educational outcomes of internships and in computational science education.
  • With NREL staff, design a survey for students designed to measure skills gained during internships and career impact.
  • Administer the survey to recent alumni of these internship programs.
  • Analyze the results and present them to NREL management.
  • Lead preparation of a manuscript for submission to peer-reviewed STEM education literature.
