This morning (1/31) at 10:30 am, Jacqueline C. McNeil, a candidate for the Discipline-Based Engineering Education Faculty position, will be sharing her research entitled "Student Transitions When Re-Entering the University".

Abstract:
This study focused on students who take a semester off from full-time coursework. To understand the difficulties that these students may encounter, this study investigated the re-entry of engineering students to a large university in the southeastern U.S. following their mandatory cooperative educational (co-op) experiences in industry. Students were surveyed and interviewed after summer, fall, and spring co-op experiences to gather data about students’ ease of transition, time of transition, and coping mechanisms for re-entry to the university. According to the 353 survey responses, 33% of students reported they had difficulty re-entering the institution after a co-op experience. Students’ engineering program and sex were predictive factors for students’ ease of transition. Many students’ coping skills were not adequate to deal with re-entry to the university.
