On Monday, 2/11, Canek Phillips, a candidate for the Discipline-Based Engineering Education Faculty position, will be sharing his research entitled "Accessibility First: Process Driven Math and Implications for Engineering Education".

Abstract:
Process-Driven Math (PDM) is an innovative audio-based method of teaching and assessing mathematics for students with visual disabilities. An adapted version of PDM shows promise for sighted learners with a wide range of abilities. In this seminar, Dr. Phillips will describe his current work investigating the efficacy of PDM, implications for engineering mechanics, and opportunities it presents to engage in convergent research that includes engineering and the natural, social and behavioral sciences.

Bio:
Dr. Phillips is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University and Colorado State University, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education from Purdue University. His interest in engineering education came from his passion to address the need to broaden the participation of racial minorities, women, and people with disabilities in engineering. Funded through the Sloan Indigenous Graduate Program, Dr. Phillips quantitatively studied the relationships among racial, gender, and class inequity in shaping US first year engineering enrollments. Ultimately, his vision is to use engineering education research to further the capacity of engineering programs to enroll and graduate students who reflect the nation’s population and to teach students engineering in an inclusive manner to benefit all.
