Barker marks first 150 days with diversity summit
Marco Barker, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s inaugural vice chancellor of diversity and inclusion, marked his first 150 days with the 2019 State of Diversity summit on Oct. 29. Nearly 280 students, faculty and staff attended the presentation in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. Barker's central message during the summit was that it will take the work of each member of the university community to reach inclusive excellence.

Nebraska hosts second annual Global Opportunities Fair
Students of all majors and minors were invited to the second annual Global Opportunities Fair, held on Oct. 30 in Hawks Hall Atrium. The event is a partnership between Nebraska's global studies, international business, anthropology and geography programs, along with the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. A variety of employers and organizations presented present global opportunities for students.

Diwali Night a celebration of different cultures in Malaysia
The Nebraska University Malaysian Students Association’s members invited UNL students to experience the cultural melting pot of Malaysia through its Diwali celebration, held on Nov. 1 at the University Suites. Traditionally, Diwali is a celebration of good over evil, the mark of the Indian or Hindu New Year or the Hindu festival of lights and new beginnings. According to Jason Chan, a senior marketing major and president of the recognized student organization, the association’s Diwali Night will be a celebration of the different cultures in Malaysia.

UNL professors give firsthand accounts of their countries ending communism
Students, faculty and guests flocked to the University Suites to listen to University of Nebraska-Lincoln professors from central and eastern Europe give first-hand accounts of communism ending in their countries at Nov. 6 Global Cafe. English professor Roland Vegso from Hungary, history professor Alexander Vazansky from Germany, global studies professor and assistant director Emira Ibrahimpasic from former Yugoslavia and modern languages and literatures professor Hana Waisserova from former Czechoslovakia spoke at the event. All four speakers gave detailed accounts of their past and reflected on their own experiences in Europe thirty years ago, with some living more restricted lives than others.

New exhibit features opens with art inspired by quilts
A new exhibition, “Studio Champloo,” opened on Dec. 6 at the International Quilt Museum and will feature work from 10 artists invited to respond to quiltmaking themes in their preferred art medium. The exhibition is based off the word “champloo,” which in one Japanese dialect means “mixed up” or “blended together.”
