On May 9, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln celebrated its spring commencement by awarding over 3,400 degrees—the second-highest number of degrees awarded in school history.

Go Big Grad celebration a university-wide, herculean effort
In early March, while Nebraska faculty and students made an unprecedented transition to remote learning, several units on campus began a similar herculean task: to make the May 9 graduation day special and memorable, despite the circumstances. From a gift box and diploma mailing, a ceremony filmed for TV and the web, and individual recognitions on social media, the new graduation plan required teamwork from across the university.

Community celebrates Rwandan student success with Graduation Parade
On May 8, members of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln community and Christ Place Church celebrated the achievement of graduating Rwandan scholars with a parade. The parade featured 14 decorated cars streaming by the Knoll Residential Center where students from the CASNR Undergraduate Scholarship Program (CUSP) stood, waving and celebrating the procession.

As a son of Colombia and a family that filled hours and air with the tones of bandola, piano and guitar, Rubén Darío Gómez learned syncopation and improvisation from an early age. A lifetime of listening to those beats—along with playing, composing and conducting them—translated to Gómez earning his doctorate on May 9.

Castillo follows international graduate research after study abroad experience
When Jazmin Castillo came to UNL as a freshman in 2013, she wanted to be a wildlife veterinarian. But those plans changed when she embarked on an education abroad trip to Botswana in the summer of 2014. After dedicating herself to international research on spotted hyenas from Botswana, Castillo earned her Master of Science in Natural Resources this May 2020.
