34 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students were awarded the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship during the 2017-2018 academic year. Combined, UNL students were awarded $132,000 in total to complete programs throughout the year across 20 different countries.

The Gilman Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. To apply, students must be U.S. citizens and Federal Pell Grant-eligible while attending a two- or four-year college.

The program, administered by the Institute of International Education since its inception in 2001, enables American students to gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures. Additional funding is also awarded through the scholarship program for the study of a critical language.
