Who We Are: Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is a state agency that, "Helps People Live Better Lives" and works daily to promote this mission as it provides services to the citizens of Nebraska. Within our Communications team, we promote that mission, priorities and brand image of the Department by communicating accurate and helpful information. We are seeking a Public Information Officer III to help with these efforts to help support Developmental Disabilities. In addition, this position will assist in supporting special projects and other divisions as needed.
The Public Information Officer III is an experienced senior level communicator and will be responsible for:
> Serving as a primary media point of contact and spokesperson, preparing and delivering strategic written and verbal responses to media requests and identifying proactive strategies to inform media, stakeholders and the public on the mission, operations and issues facing DHHS divisions
> Advising DHHS CEO and division directors on complex, rapidly changing and potentially high profile issues regarding DHHS Researching issues and strategize key messages based on sound public relations approaches
> Composing news releases, speeches, presentations, web content, social media and written correspondence
> Coordinating and overseeing release of information such as division reports and newsletters
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising, creative writing or related field and three years related experience. Experience in developing, planning and managing public relations/publicity campaigns, mass media communication activities or public information programs may substitute for the education on a year for year basis.
PREFERRED: In addition to the above requirements, familiarity with current practices and issues relevant to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, community health programs, non-profit organizations, government experience and training in cultural sensitivity is a plus.
Knowledge of: the development, planning, implementation and management of public relation/publicity campaigns, informational material preparation, mass media communication activities, public information programs; statewide and local media sources and operations; reference sources; inter-relationships between public information and administrative/program activities.
Ability to communicate effectively with various individuals and groups; apply principles and practices of public relations to operation of a public information function; apply crisis and risk communication strategies; work cooperatively with a team of professionals.
