Copy Editor - The Daily Record (Omaha, NE)

The Daily Record has an opening for a full-time copy editor. The position is primarily editorial but would also include some customer service responsibilities and some other duties as assigned.

We are looking for someone who is a strong written and visual communicator and who thrives in a team environment. The Daily Record is a small business, where flexibility and adaptability are crucial attributes and everything you do impacts your colleagues’ ability to get their work done.

Our ideal candidate would have experience:
> Designing publications in Adobe InDesign. Graphic design or advertising also is helpful.
> Reporting, editing and writing for a community newspaper, including following AP style.
> Explaining civic and legal issues in a clear, direct manner for a general interest audience.
> Contributing to group projects requiring both self-direction and coordination with others.

This opening is for a full-time position with work typically taking place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at our offices at 3323 Leavenworth St. Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required.

This is a new role in our organization, but we anticipate the Copy Editor having five key tasks:
1.) Designing the daily paper in Adobe InDesign at the direction of the Managing Editor.
2.) Editing news stories and headlines for content, style consistency and length.
3.) Proofing legal notices for content and style in coordination with the Legals Editor.
4.) Assisting our customer service team by answering the phone as well as assisting walk-in customers (once we reopen to the public) or other related administrative/office duties.
5.) Writing stories and briefs about local government and other topics.

Founded in 1886, The Daily Record is locally owned and operated. Our newspaper specializes in serving the legal community of Omaha, and we’re primarily funded through legal notices. We are the official publication for several local entities. We publish weekdays, five days a week.
