NPA Foundation 2021 Summer Internship Scholarship Program

The Nebraska Press Association Foundation encourages talented young people to enter the newspaper business. 2021 is the fifth year that the Foundation will award scholarships to Nebraska college students. The Foundation’s internship program provides a meaningful, hands-on training experience for students interested in news reporting, copy editing, photojournalism, advertising/marketing, graphic design, visual communications or social media. Our internship program prepares students for careers at Nebraska newspapers after they graduate.

Up to five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to summer interns who are placed at NPA member weekly or small daily newspapers, allowing students an invaluable real-world training experience. If selected as an intern, you would be placed at a weekly or small daily newspaper near the area or areas you put on your application. We will place you in a good learning environment, but we cannot guarantee you placement at a particular newspaper.

2021 Internship Scholarship Guidelines:
> Students that participated in the NPA Foundation 2020 internship program are NOT ELIGIBLE for the 2021 program. The program is available only to students enrolled in a Nebraska college or university and majoring in journalism, communications or advertising/marketing. Interns can be involved in any aspect of journalism — reporting, photography, videography, graphic art/design, advertising/marketing or social media.
> The eight-week internships will take place summer of 2021; students must submit internship application form, reference letter(s), resume and work samples to the Nebraska Press Association office by mail or email. NPA will forward application forms & accompanying documents to the participating newspapers. Participating newspapers must agree to pay interns a living wage, offer a housing stipend, and provide on-site, hands-on experience at their newspaper. Each employer will define the specifics of the job. Newspapers will contact students directly to set up interviews, provide job descriptions, make job offers, etc.
> NOTE: Students must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for the duration of their internship, and must notify newspapers if they plan to have an additional job during the same time as their internship (for availability/scheduling purposes).
> Once the internship is successfully completed, the intern and the newspaper must submit a closeout evaluation to NPA office. Upon completion, the student will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the NPA Foundation (check sent to their school for deposit into student’s account) to assist with tuition.

This is a paid internship. Pay is set by each participating newspaper. Internship scholarships are open to student journalists who attend a four-year college in Nebraska. If you have questions about the internship program, contact Susan Watson via email at nebpress@nebpress.com or call 800-369-2850.
