Lancaster County 4‑H is proud to announce David Smith of Lincoln as winner of the January “Heart of 4‑H Award” in recognition of outstanding volunteer service.

A former Extension staff member, David has continued to volunteer with 4‑H since transferring to a City of Lincoln employee in 2017. At the annual Clover College, he has taught 4-hour fishing workshops where youth are driven to Bowling Lake and learn to fish. The most common fish caught are bluegill, sunfish, bass and catfish, which the youth catch and release.

“I like youth activities, especially hands-on outdoor activities,” David says. “I like to teach children and introduce them to new activities. I also like to give back to the community if I can, and volunteering is a great way for me to do that. My favorite experience as a 4‑H volunteer is taking children who have never fished before and teaching them how to fish.”

Extension Educator Tracy Anderson says, “The fishing workshop is always a hit, filling up quickly as our 4‑H’ers embrace the chance to learn how to fish! Over the years, I’ve witnessed David’s dedication as he generously shares his time and expertise with youth, both through fishing at Clover College and other engaging workshops.”
